This student activist was arrested approximately one week ago, Monday April 6, 2009, by the Zanjan prosecutor general and taken to the Zanjan prison. Without the presence of an attorney, Mr. Firoozi was tried for a second case, and is now awaiting the issuance of the sentence.
The prosecutor general of Zanjan proceeded to fabricate a second charge for this reporter. These new charges are based on Firoozi’s writings of personal thoughts and opinions on his own weblog. After hours of interrogation about this matter, the officials sent the new found charges to the court. Firoozi, whom yet again did not have his attorney present, due to the attorney’s travels abroad, had to defend himself in this second trial.
This fellow member of Human Rights Activist in Iran, who could be freed on bail, was denied bail by the prosecutor general and is still under arrest and in prison. It has been reported that the sentences against this student activist and defender of human rights will be issued in the next week.
Ali Reza Firoozi, a member of the Zanjan University Muslim Society and the Center for Strengthening of Unity, and a contributor to many of the national newspapers, is one of the individuals charged in the case against the Zanjan University students. The case of the Zanjan University students stemmed from the efforts of a number of university students, including Firoozi, to stop a university official from taking advantage of a female university student. The Zanjan court sentenced Hasan Madadi, the offender, to 30 lashes and payment of retributory fees, while the fifteen university students have been denied their education, and some have been arrested and placed in prison.
